In their research, Ingrid Bauer-Hänsel, TC Eley, Ivo Blohm, and Kalle Lyytinen examine why, despite its tremendous potential, the effective use of generative artificial intelligence remains a challenge for many organizations. Their paper demonstrates that generative AI introduces novel forms of uncertainty that differ fundamentally from those associated with traditional AI systems.
Based on expert interviews, the researchers develop practical approaches to help organizations address these challenges. Their findings show that successfully implementing generative AI requires a shift in how organizations manage uncertainty. This includes new forms of human oversight, adapted development and deployment processes, and new methods for evaluating the reliability of AI systems.
The research makes an important contribution to understanding the origins of uncertainty in generative AI systems and provides practical recommendations for managing these uncertainties to enable the successful adoption of generative AI in organizations.
