Symposium: Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovations

On March 5, 2024, renowned researchers discussed the latest developments and ethical challenges in dealing with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at SQUARE (HSG). The symposium was organized by Prof. Dr. Thomas Grisold, Assistant Professor at the School of Management of the University of St.Gallen.

What ethical challenges arise when using AI? This question was the focus of the lecture by Prof. Nicholas Berente from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA). He emphasized the importance of constantly considering how AI can best be used so that its use remains fair and responsible. Only through constant discussion and research can there be an understanding of how AI should be used ethically.

Prof. Stefan Seidel (University of Cologne) then spoke about regulation that should apply to AI. He explained that regulation should be designed in a way that it remains valid for future new technologies. Seidel explained how new technologies have already been regulated in the past and said that we could learn from these examples.

Prof. Dr. Ivo Blohm, Associate Professor at the Institute of Information Systems and Digital Business (IWI-HSG), showed that AI can help us to become more creative. In his research, he is investigating how generative AI can help people to increase their creativity. His findings indicate that textual AI-generated feedback has a stronger effect on people's imagination than AI-generated visualizations of ideas, enabling them to develop better ideas.

Can AI itself be creative? Prof. Dr. Vivianne Fang He, Associate Professor of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Institute of Responsible Innovation (IRI-HSG), is researching this question. She illustrated how AI can create new combinations, which in turn lead to new ideas. However, Prof. Fang He also emphasized the importance of keeping people involved in the creative process to ensure the usability of ideas.

In a concluding panel discussion between the speakers and the audience, the main topic was the future of AI research. Participants exchanged ideas on how to best understand and utilize the opportunities and challenges of AI. The symposium was not only an opportunity to learn new things, but also an inspiration for future collaborations and research projects.
