DSR is the dominant research approach at IWI-HSG. In addition to our involvement in the community (editorial contributions to scientific journals and conferences), we contribute to advancing research methods and techniques, for example, in terms of validity, modularization, or communication excellence.

The digital transformation and implementation of profitable business models pose significant challenges for management and boards. The research area of Governance of Digital Transformation develops models for controlling and measuring success factors, as well as guidelines on topics such as strategy design, backbone architecture, agile transformation, and digital business models.

Complex business processes have led to highly complex data management and analytics systems in large companies. Our research aims to effectively manage and enhance these systems so that companies can flexibly respond to future challenges. Our research topics include data management, quality, platforms, regulation, technology stacks, and applied data science.

Digital platforms are in tension between maintaining control and fostering generativity/emergence. While pure control hampers adaptability, pure emergence comes with the cost of experimentation without reaping associated benefits. Our research transcends such an either-or approach to establish a balance between control and emergence in bilateral digital platforms.

Virtually all major organizations today must contend with the significant complexity of their information systems. Architectural coordination provides a holistic perspective on this multitude of information systems within an organization, aiming to coordinate all small and large change activities to maintain both consistency and operational stability on one hand, and to preserve resources for flexibility and innovation on the other.
