At the close of the spring semester, the Institute of Information Systems and Digital Business bid farewell to Prof. Dr. Andrea Back. In a dignified valedictory lecture, the Chair celebrated her decades-long dedication to teaching and research—after more than 30 years at HSG, she now embarks on a well-deserved retirement.
Since her appointment as the inaugural female full Professor of Information Systems in 1994, Prof. Dr. Back has shaped not only the academic trajectory of the discipline but also the careers of countless students as instructor, mentor, and role model. Driven by curiosity, outstanding expertise, and personal commitment, she has guided generations through innovations in digital strategy, transformation, and innovation. Alongside leading numerous industry-oriented research projects, she supervised more than a dozen doctoral candidates—an impact that this brief tribute can scarcely convey in full.
In their remarks, Rector Prof. Dr. Manuel Ammann and Dean Prof. Dr. Björn Ambos lauded Prof. Dr. Back’s pioneering contributions, her passion for teaching, and her lasting influence on research and university life.
A technical highlight of the event was a compelling demonstration of humanoid robotics. Tracing the evolution from early mechanical automatons to today’s advances in artificial intelligence and neural networks, Prof. Dr. Back delivered a sweeping overview—culminating in a charming robot appearance that greeted and delighted the audience.
The Institute extends its heartfelt thanks to Prof. Dr. Andrea Back for her visionary work, tireless dedication, and the many impulses she has given to IWI and HSG. We look forward to her remaining connected with the university as a cherished alumna following her emeritation.
