Abstract:

The Information Systems field has traditionally focused most of the research effort on understanding technology within a single organizational context — from a monocentric vantage point of a single organization. However, the widespread diffusion of Internet-enabled technologies in the early 1990s has since seen an explosion in technologies enabling interconnectivity in polycentric arrangements. The past decades have, as a result, seen an Information Systems research response towards expanding the research agenda to studying inter-organizational systems, digital platforms, technology-enabled ecosystems, and digital infrastructures. This talk seeks to frame more than three decades of research into the organizational adoption of technologies that all support various aspects of polycentric interconnectivity and also to set out a future agenda for the study of polycentric enterprise technologies..

Carsten Sørensen is DIREC Professor in Digital Transformation within Department of Digitalization at Copenhagen Business School and a visiting professor at Linnaeus University. He is a Founding Academic Fellow of the Aalto Center for Digital Business Growth, Finland. Carsten has been affiliated with several Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and British institutions, and worked 25 years at The London School of Economics and Political Science. His research is published widely across all the main Information Systems journals. Carsten holds a BSc. in mathematics, an MSc in computer science and a Ph.D. in information systems from Aalborg University, Denmark. He has extensive EU research project experience from 1992 and international project experience from 1990 with a combined research portfolio of around €5 million. He has served as editor, trustee, and advisory board member of several Information Systems journals and has organised multiple conferences and workshops. Carsten represented the LSE in the Hedera Council and he served as a member of the Board of Directors of LSE Enterprise, and he is a Non-Executive Co-Founder and Board Advisor for RedGirraffe.com. He has since the late 80s been actively engaged as consultant and executive educator with a range of organisations, for example; AXA, Carphone Warehouse, China Telecom, Danish Ministry of Science, EDS, Gartner, GEMS, Google, Henkel, Huawei, Intel, International Monetary Fund, KMD, LloydsGroup, LSE Enterprise, Mahindra Satyam, Mastercard, Microsoft, National School of Government UK, Orange, PA Consulting, Polycom, Prudential, Skype, Steria, SurveyMonkey, Telenor, UBS, and Vodafone.
