Abstract:
Design science research (DSR) is an established approach to create innovative artifacts and more abstract design knowledge. Design principles (DPs) are among the most common knowledge contributions, capturing how-to guidance for designing solutions from a similar class of artifacts. Yet the growing body of DPs remains fragmented, and design knowledge rarely accumulates across studies. As a consequence, DPs are seldom reused, and researchers tend to start from scratch rather than building on prior design knowledge. In this article, we argue that DSR meta-syntheses can make the existing body of DPs transparent, identify and discuss contradictions, and support the accumulation and evolution of design knowledge, in turn improving the reusability of DPs. However, it remains unclear how such meta-syntheses should be conducted within DSR. We therefore developed an approach for conducting meta-syntheses grounded in DSR-specific terms, evaluated it with DSR scholars, and demonstrated its application in two use cases addressing virtual reality and conversational agent artifacts. Building on this, we offer guidance on how meta-syntheses can be conducted in DSR and why they matter for making fragmented design knowledge transparent and open to further development. With this, we seek to open a discussion on the role of meta-syntheses in DSR and to foster a more cumulative research tradition in which scholars build on existing design knowledge rather than starting from scratch.

CV/Short Bio Dr. Bijan Khosrawi-Rad
Dr. Bijan Khosrawi-Rad is a postdoctoral researcher at Leuphana University Lüneburg. He earned his PhD at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he led several third-party-funded projects, particularly in the areas of digital learning and AI in education (e.g., StudyBuddy, DigiStar). His research focuses on digital learning and game-based learning, human-AI collaboration, entrepreneurship and digital transformation, as well as design science research as a methodological approach for generating prescriptive knowledge about innovative IT solutions. In his research, he is particularly passionate about creating value-sensitive digital services, mainly focusing on the idea of collaborative relationships between humans and machines. His work has been recognized with several awards, including the AIS Senior Scholar Best IS Publication Award 2024, the CAIS Paul Gray Award for the most thought-provoking paper, and the Best Dissertation Awad at Technical University of Braunschweig.
