Digitalization is fundamentally changing markets and organizations. To survive in a fast-paced and uncertain environment, organizations are looking for ways to become more flexible and productive. To achieve these goals, organizations can use the concept of internal crowdsourcing to re-staff their employees via digital platforms using open tenders for temporary work assignments.
In this project, we develop a theoretical framework that conceptualizes the transformation process when organizations seek platform-based approaches such as internal crowdsourcing to orchestrate their work processes. Based on the theories of Socio-Technical Systems Theory and Technochange. This new perspective offers a completely new view on platform-based work that has been neglected in previous research and sheds light on a fundamental change in organizations - the way organizations organize, allocate and perform work. In doing so, we explore an important organizational innovation that has the potential to increase the innovative power and productivity of companies while creating more flexible and self-determining working conditions for the individuals involved. The project results can be applied by a wide range of companies, as they are in principle not bound to a specific industry, business function or organizational form. Our results will help companies to successfully manage the transformation process from traditional work settings to platform-based forms of work organization such as internal crowdsourcing. During the project, we will offer various lectures on digital business that will benefit from the results. In this way, the project contributes to the University of St. Gallen's efforts to provide students with skills for a digitalized world.
